What it is

Ultraviolet (UV) ink is a covert security feature. It is invisible to the naked eye and only shows under a UV or black light, so it gives a check that a casual copier is unlikely to reproduce and unlikely to notice.

UV ink can be printed on the surface of the label or within the sub-surface void message. Printed on the surface, pack integrity can be verified quickly with a black light.

What happens when the label is disturbed

This is an option applied to a permanent tamper evident label, not a different kind of evidence. The label still works the same way: lifting it breaks the face, leaves the hidden message and adhesive behind on the surface, and the label cannot be put back looking as it did. The option below changes what is printed, numbered or verified — not the tamper mechanism.

Before you specify

  • Decide who checks it and with what lamp — a covert feature is only worth having if someone looks
  • Confirm whether the UV element should read on the label surface or in the revealed message
  • Keep the UV design simple; fine detail is harder to read under a hand-held lamp
