Choosing a label
Which tamper evident label should you use?
The constructions above differ in one decisive way: what is left behind when the label is removed. Start from the surface and the workflow, not from a product code.
1. Should the evidence stay on the pack, or on the label?
- Permanent — the VOID or custom security message transfers onto the surface, so the evidence remains on the pack after the label is removed and thrown away.
- Non-residue — the label lifts cleanly, the message stays on the label, and the surface is left unmarked. The used label itself becomes the record.
- Reusable assets, cabinets, trolleys, vehicles and returnable totes usually want non-residue. Single-trip cartons and consumer packs usually want permanent.
2. Film or paper?
- Film — for moisture, handling, abrasion, chilled and outdoor conditions, and for the widest range of standard sizes and stock colours.
- Paper — where the pack must stay in one paper recycling stream, or a packaging specification calls for paper. TamperTech permanent paper labels reveal a clean dry-peel VOID message; they are not a fibre-tear label.
- Paper changes the carrier and the recycling stream, not the level of security.
3. Visible warning, or hidden check?
- Overt — the message is visible before and after removal, so anyone receiving the pack can see interference without training.
- Covert — the label looks plain until removal reveals the message, which suits internal checks rather than public-facing deterrence.
- Where a pack is sealed by you, handled by others and checked by you again, both are often used — one to deter, one to confirm.
4. Does the label have to identify the seal?
- Sequential numbers and barcodes — so a seal can be logged at closure and verified at receipt. A dual number tab lets the number be retained while the label stays on the pack.
- Custom print and security message — your own wording or brand in the transferred message, printed as UV flexographic spot colour to a Pantone reference.
- Print on demand — where variable data must be produced in house, thermal transfer stock is available in both tamper constructions.
Before the specification is fixed

A disturbed label shows the seal was interfered with. It does not confirm what is inside the pack, or that nothing was accessed by another route. These are tamper-evident constructions, not tamper-proof — and numbering is only evidence when it is recorded and checked.

Four ways in. The first decision is what should happen when the label is lifted; the print route and the application follow from it.
Non-residue / no-transfer
The label lifts away cleanly and the surface underneath is left unmarked. Right for equipment and containers that go back into service.
Permanent / transfer
The label stays bonded and leaves the security message behind on the pack, so the evidence survives after the label is thrown away.
Printable / variable data
Any label in the range can be supplied printable, so you can overprint serial numbers, barcodes and batch data on your own printers.

What is a DR?
A DR is a Design Reference, everything that we make has one of these and each one has key information, a complete visual for your product that you will receive, before during and after opening or tampering.
What is Tamper Evidence?
Tamper evidence is a security measure that indicates if someone has tried to access or alter a protected item. It comes in various forms, like seals, markings, or tapes.
While some tamper evidence might be difficult to tamper with without leaving a trace, the main goal is to clearly show evidence of tampering, not necessarily prevent it altogether, but always to deter. Bespoke Tamper Evident Labels are a key way to achieve the prevention desired.
What are Dual Number Tabs?
Dual Number Tabs (DNT’s) offer a double numbering system: The label has a number printed on the main label and also on a dedicated tab. This could be:
- A serial number for individual item tracking.
- A lot number for identifying a batch of products.
- A customer reference number and an internal tracking number.
This is used for:
- Customer receipt with details of the purchase.
- Proof of delivery with tracking information.
- Warranty registration tab with product information.
What is a Finger Lift?
A Finger Lift, is the outcome of a dry edge to the label, for easy picking and application.
Also known as the adhesive coating method of stripe coating.
What are the Non Residue Tamper Evident Label Product Codes?
X22 – Our standard most versatile non residue or no transfer security label. Leaving the hidden security message in itself upon removal/tampering, completely irreversible.
X22FU – a more specialist version of X22 which has additional features to highlight what it has been attacked with; security cuts, reacts to solvent and heat in different ways.
X2005 – non residue with outline void, designed to be applied to high surface energy materials like car doors and fuel pumps as it will not leave any residue behind when removed.
X22G UV – clear non residue gloss labels with UV hidden ink making them glow under blacklight, making it easier to check covert security labels for tampering.
What are the Permanent Tamper Evident Label Product Codes?
PL – Total transfer permanent tamper evident labels can never be removed! Permanent labels can have surface OR sub-surface numbers and/ or barcodes.
P22H – Total transfer label which leaves a permanent security void message behind on the surface, which can be rubbed off leaving no permanent damage, so the packaging can be re-used.
P22G UV – clear permanent gloss labels with UV ink making them glow under blacklight, both the label and the void message will glow, making it easier to check covert security labels for tampering.
LLP – Liner Less Labels Permanent The liner-less label solution is easy to apply and reduces packaging waste. Liner-less labels increases roll capacity by 50%, which delivers extra advantages in the reduction of waste, shipping, carriage, and storage costs.
Box TP – Total transfer permanent tamper evident tape that can never be removed! Permanent tape can have surface OR sub-surface numbers and/ or barcodes.
What is a Security Cut?
A security cut in a label is a deliberate weakening pattern incorporated during the manufacturing process. This pattern makes the label very difficult, if not impossible, to remove in one piece.
Here’s a breakdown of how they work:
- The Cut: A special die creates a series of slits or perforations in a specific design throughout the label material. These cuts are usually very thin and might not be readily noticeable on the surface.
- Tamper Evident: When someone tries to remove the label, it breaks or tears along the pre-cut lines due to the weakened areas. This leaves a clear visual sign that tampering has occurred.
There are two main benefits to security cuts in labels:
- Deterrence: The presence of security cuts discourages tampering in the first place, as it’s obvious the label will be damaged if removed.
- Detection: If someone does tamper with the label, the tears or breaks along the cuts clearly indicate it has been tampered with.
Overall, security cuts are a simple yet effective way to add a layer of security to labels and deter tampering.
Terminology
Anti tamper, tamper proof, tamper evident: the same requirement
Buyers search for anti tamper tape, anti tamper labels and tamper proof tape. In almost every case that is the same requirement we describe as tamper evident: a seal that cannot be lifted and put back without leaving a visible, permanent record. Tamper evident is the accurate description, because a tape or a label does not prevent access to a pack — it makes access impossible to hide. Permanent
The label stays put and reveals a dry-peel VOID or custom security message when it is lifted. The strongest visual record where marking the surface is acceptable.

Non-residue
Lifting shows the message on the label and leaves the surface clean, for returnable assets, retail packs and finished goods.

Overt or covert
The reveal can be plainly visible to anyone handling the pack, or only visible under UV or a specific light, where you would rather not advertise the check.
