Container seals get attention because they are auditable and regulated. Product packaging gets attention because the customer sees it. In between sits the unit that actually moves through most of the journey — the pallet — usually protected by nothing more than stretch wrap.
Stretch wrap is a load-stabilisation material. It is available in every warehouse in the world, it can be cut and replaced in under a minute, and it carries no evidence that it was ever disturbed. That is the gap pallet-level tamper evidence is meant to close.
How pallet loads are interfered with
The pattern in transit pilferage is quiet, partial and slow to surface:
- Cut and re-wrap. Film is slit, cases are removed, the load is re-wrapped with identical film. Nothing about the finished pallet looks different.
- Middle-out extraction. Cases are taken from the centre of the stack while the corners stay square, so the load still looks full to a passing inspection.
- Cross-dock access. Busy transfer sites make unauthorised handling hard to distinguish from routine re-stacking.
- Unsupervised stops. Trailer curtains and unattended parking remain a persistent exposure; Europe’s cargo-crime reporting, such as the TAPA incident data, consistently shows unsecured parking among the most common locations for cargo theft.
- Patch repairs. Clear packing tape over a slit in clear film is hard to notice unless someone is specifically checking.
- Delayed discovery. By the time a short shipment is reported, the load has passed through several handovers and liability is genuinely hard to place.
Note what these have in common: the loss is not the only cost. The absence of evidence is what turns a shortage into a dispute nobody can resolve.
What tamper-evident pallet tape adds
A pallet security tape is applied over the wrap at the access points. If it is lifted, the layers separate and a VOID message appears on the tape and, depending on construction, on the film. If it is cut, the cut edge and the printed pattern no longer line up. Serialised versions keep the number and barcode legible after voiding, which is what lets a receiving site say which seal was disturbed rather than just that something looks wrong.
Where it fits, honestly: this is deterrence and evidence, not physical security. It will not stop an organised team that takes the whole load, and it does not replace route planning, secure parking or driver procedure. What it does is remove the “we can’t tell where it happened” answer, which is usually the reason the same route keeps losing stock.

Specifying it so it survives the journey
Adhesion is to film, not to board
Stretch wrap is a low-surface-energy plastic and it is often dusty. Tapes intended for cartons frequently disappoint on wrap. Pallet constructions are designed for that surface, and they perform best applied over several wrap layers with firm pressure rather than onto a single loose film layer.
Temperature at application and in transit
Adhesive tack drops in cold conditions and a seal applied in a chilled bay may never reach full bond. Loads that move from ambient to frozen and back also collect condensation. If your route includes those transitions, test in them rather than in the office.
Placement
Seal the access points, not the middle of a face. A cross or T-junction over the top edge and over the corner where wrap is normally cut gives an inspector two obvious places to look. Overlap the tape onto itself where the construction supports it.
Serialise, then use the number
Record the seal number on the despatch documentation or bill of lading. Without that step the tape shows only that something was disturbed; with it, each handover has a verifiable value to check against.
Make checking somebody’s job
Instruct receiving sites to inspect and photograph the seal on arrival, and to record a voided or missing seal before signing. A pallet accepted clean and queried a week later is exactly the situation the seal was bought to avoid.
The business case, without invented numbers
We are not going to publish an ROI figure we cannot evidence. Build it from your own data instead: the value of shortages recorded per route over twelve months, the administrative hours spent investigating them, your insurance excess per claim, and the number of pallets a roll of tape seals. Most operations find the decision is made by the disputed-liability cost rather than by the value of the missing cases.
A workable four-step routine
- Wrap as normal for load stability.
- Apply security tape across the access points, firmly, over multiple wrap layers.
- Record the serial number on the despatch paperwork.
- Inspect and photograph at every handover, and reject or note a voided seal before liability transfers.
